Research Hydrologist

As a Supervisory Hydrologist within the Lower Mississippi Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Serves as Team Lead Scientist for Ecological flow Research. Responsible for planning, coordinating, conducting, and broad understanding of original scientific research on the influence exerted by hydrologic regime on the ecology of freshwater bodies, including the structure, composition, and resilience of aquatic and riparian plant and animals communities. Identifies, develop, and implement broad research objectives, policies available funding, facilitate, and provides support personnel. Also, establish project priorities, define methods of approach and execute the study. Independently uses sound judgement and ingenuity to select, modify, and properly apply existing knowledge and techniques to the research area as well as critically exploring new knowledge, methods and techniques. The incumbent combines such insights and approaches into a system and holistic examination of board scientific problems. Serves as a competent and productive researcher capable of conceiving, formulating, conducting, and/or leading research studies in the field of ecological hydrology. Knowledge in advance professional knowledge of surface-water hydrology, and with specialization in ecological applications. Skills in streamflow statistics and experience with surface-water modeling and regional regression analysis. Demonstrated research attainments or ability to make significant research contribution to his/her field. Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics. OR B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in A above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in A above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in A above. For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
